If you’re over 40, working at a desk, walking a fair bit, and thinking: “I’m not very strong… and I don’t even know what Pilates is” — you’re exactly who we teach every day.
At PILATESCENE we run calm, small-group Reformer Pilates classes in Briarhill and Clarinbridge. No gym vibe. No loud music. No pressure to be bendy or “fit”. Just proper teaching, at a pace that makes sense.
First things first: what is the Reformer?
The Reformer is a piece of Pilates equipment with a moving carriage and springs. The springs can make exercises easier or harder, depending on what you need.
For beginners (especially desk bodies), the Reformer is brilliant because it:
Supports you while you learn new movement patterns
Helps you build strength without feeling injury.
Gives you feedback (so you can feel what you’re doing)
What happens in your first class?
A beginner class is not about fancy moves. It’s about learning the basics:
How to set up your body (so you’re not loading your back/hips/shoulders)
How to breathe and move with control
How to find your “centre” so you feel you worked your tummy muscles the next day
You’ll be guided the whole way. We keep classes small so you’re not left guessing.
What should you wear (and bring)?
Keep it simple:
Comfortable clothes you can move in (leggings/joggers + a top)
Grip socks if you have them we have them at the studio if you need them.
A water bottle
You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be strong. You don’t need to “get in shape first”.
I’m nervous I’ll be the worst one…
You won’t. You’re coming and we will get you so good on the Reformer in no time. You’ll start to look and feel better. People get addicted to Pilates for a reason.
Most of our beginners are women who:
Sit a lot for work
Don’t go to the gym
Walk, but feel stiff/achy
Have a bit of back or hip niggle
Worry about their body and want to get it back on track
Want to feel stronger without the whole performance of fitness culture
We’re used to teaching real bodies — not Instagram bodies. None of our clients are made of rubber and there are so many beginners in Briarhill and Clarinbridge. It’s a great time to start.
Will it help my back / hips / posture?
Yes — but not because we promise miracles.
What tends to change first is:
You feel more supported through your middle, It’s nice to feel that burn for two days after class
Your posture improves (you feel “taller”)
Your hips and upper back start to move better
You feel less stiff getting up from the desk or out of the car
If you’ve got something specific going on (back pain, osteoporosis, pregnancy/postnatal, etc.), tell us. We’ll guide you to the right class and make sensible modifications.
How often should I come?
If you can do once a week, you’ll feel benefits.
If you can do twice a week, you’ll usually feel changes faster — strength, confidence, and that “I’m not as stiff” feeling.
The best plan is the one you’ll actually stick to.
The easiest way to start: the €60 intro offer
If you’re new, the simplest way in is our €60 intro offer (3 classes). It gives you a chance to settle in, learn the basics, and feel the difference.
