My promise to you is that by attending my  200-hour Classical Yoga Teacher Training you will:

  • Learn to teach and to practice 42 asanas and their variations - these are the asanas I have been teaching for over 20 years - they are the asanas that are what I call all-stars and completely accessible to the general Irish public that you will be teaching. There are no crazy lotus, headstands, handstand poses here - just the solid aloo gobi ( yoga speak for meat and potatoes) that I have used for 20 years in my classes. These are the asanas most Iyengar teachers teach at workshops and intensives. We use a familiar landscape like downward dog and teach different actions in a landscape known. Rather than learning a large volume of asanas most of which you are unlikely to be able to teach to most of your clients.

  • Experience how to draw on the physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual benefits of yoga and share them with your students - yoga is so much more than a physical practice. This course is non religious but is a journey of personal growth and expansion and hence spirit. Doing yoga training is always transformative both for me as a teacher and the students. We meet ourselves on the mat - warts and all - it is a truly interesting journey with many hidden gems revealed along the way. We come together in a supportive community that allows us to be beginners, make mistakes, learn from them and forge ourselves in great teachers.

  • Learn the appropriate and correct alignments for each posture - by alignment I mean bones. Learn where to initiate movement from so the asanas are stable and sustainable. By initiation I mean which muscles should be employed.

  • Explore the modifications and variations of the most common asanas.

  • Learn the key elements of each asana and how to bring a student from beginner to intermediate standard.

  • Learn and practice the art of hands-on-adjustment and tactile cues.

  • Understand basic anatomy.

  • Experience and practice different relaxation and meditation techniques

  • I will share with you everything I know and have learnt over my many years of study, I am also a student and I learn things literally every week from my students.

This course is for you if :

  • You have been practicing yoga - and want to move to the next level.

  • You want to learn how to get harmony between body, mind and soul.

  • You want to deepen your personal asana and meditation practice.

  • You want to learn and practice in a compassionate and non-competitive yet challenging environment. The spirit of this course is that we support each other on this journey and we enjoy the ride.

  • Are looking for a comprehensive, safe, well/structured, anatomically precise yet intuitive approach.

  • You wish to explore the subtler and deeper level of awareness.

  • You have a strong desire and urge to share this art of living with others.

  • You are already a yoga teacher but you want to study in the style of Iyengar or just immerse in a great course for further growth. I can guarantee you will learn so much.

THE PRACTICE

  • The OG ( Original ) Yoga: You will develop a weekly practice of an hour a day based on the 42 asanas on the course so the learning is deep in your body. All regressions count as the asanas.

  • You will also get to practice other elements of yoga such as restorative yoga, meditation and relaxation during the course.

  • I will work individually with each student to bring on their practice. You will do 5 one-on-one sessions with me over the 10 month training - either by zoom or in person. This is going to really boost your practice and teaching. It also means we are free to focus on the teaching when we are in group.

ALIGNMENT AND ADJUSTMENT

During the course, we will focus on practice and develop alignment and adjustment techniques for the main postures of the OG Yoga. This work will also include modifications, similar poses, appropriate use of props and regular hands-on adjustments practice.

THE ART OF TEACHING

TEACHING PRACTICE, METHODOLOGY AND TECHNIQUE

“The best way to learn is to teach” – Frank Oppenheimer

My 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training course will enable you to teach from your heart and personal experience rather than just from mouth and memory. We don’t talk people into asanas - although we do need to know this too. My Yoga Teacher Training program is a practical training course designed to help you to become a confident, safe and effective Yoga teacher for all level of students. By the end of the course you will be able to teach a mixed-level open yoga class confidently. There is nothing worse than finishing a course without the confidence to teach.
Since I offer you a practical approach, there will be lots of opportunities for you to teach. You will start as I did - teaching a friend or two so you get to practice the skills you need. You will receive feedback from me to help you to improve and to find your unique voice and style as a teacher - there are so many ways to be a teacher. We will use videos to practice and receive feedback. As soon as I feel the group is ready I will give you video homework to do - you will record yourself teaching the choreography of 6 poses in a month, send me the videos and I will feedback to you. I have found this blended learning really invaluable in moving a student to the belief that they can be a teacher. This takes some time. I have met many people who have done yoga teacher training but not felt confident to teach after the course. This is not going to happen on this course. I will make sure you finish and you qualify - but more than that you will be so confident it will be a natural next step to start teaching.
You will learn the principles of the order of the poses based on a chosen theme or thread. There will be lots of guidance on how to improve and enhance your teaching skills and how to plan and structure a class.
In addition, you will learn about the principles of demonstration, observation, assisting and correcting, verbal instructions, teaching styles, the qualities of a teacher, floor presence, planning and structuring a class, alignment and hands-on-adjustment, dealing with injuries and safety precautions, business aspects of teaching yoga, marketing and much more. When I think about it there are alot of elements to being a succesful yoga teacher - ultimately its always about looking after your students. Making sure they are getting what they want, need and expect.

However all this really does require a commitment from the student. This course is intense, deep and is filled with various homework, tasks and reflections. If you are not 100% sure make sure to give me a call. I have had plenty of people call and the course just not the right one for them. We have to be a fit for it to work. For example I had one lady come - she loves flow yoga - but that is not what I teach. I asked her why would she not learn flow yoga as that is what she loves and practices. She thought it wouldn’t matter - but it does - it really does. The course was definitely not going to suit her - she left after 3 weekends. Don’t get me wrong I love flow and I have many students who love flow - but that is not this course. My course is about slowing down, going deeper and finding out how the body, breath and mind work to come together in yogic union - or not as is often the case. Its about helping you to understand your body and hence your students’ bodies. All of my Yoga Teacher Trainees have some body issue or another - hips, hips, back, sciatica, discectomy, rotator cuff injury, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, body weight. There is none of us perfect and your students won’t be either. You will be a better teacher if you have found it really hard to get your heels down in downward dog, you will be a relatable teacher - people dig that.

RELAXATION AND MEDITATION

You will learn and practice relaxation and meditation techniques so you can destress your students at the end of a hard day. These tools are so important for you as a teacher to maintain your own wellness as your classes become more in demand. Teaching students to go inwards, quieten down and dial down their thinking brain can be a game changer for them. These tools are simple to learn and so valuable in our modern world. If you plan on running retreats or weekend workshops these tools are vital.

ANATOMY

When we talk about alignment in yoga what are we talking about ? The bones ! - We will be learning them. When we talk about initiation what are we talking about? The muscles ! We will be learning them too . However your students do not want to hear you teaching in anatomy speak - who knows where their adductors are? No-one. However everyone can work with their inner thighs - but as the teacher you need to know a bit about this.

On the weekend we will do a one hour anatomy class - taught by me in a relevant to yoga way - we are not physios we are yoga teachers - however if a student comes to you with back pain you need to know whats going on and how to help that student to work with her issues in conjunction of course with their body worker. You need to know which poses may exacerbate their issues and which may alleviate them. You need to know how to help that student to help herself by modification.

  • We will study different regions of the body: legs, arms, spine , shoulders, ribs - in the sense of what students do with these parts of their bodies in asana and how we can see their strengths and weaknesses and postural bias in movement. I absolutely love anatomy and bringing it to life so don’t worry if this seems daunting you will love it. You do not need a lot of latin names to be a yoga teacher - but if you are interested in alignment you are interested in bones.

THE BUSINESS OF YOGA

I’ve been self employed for 25 years and I used to be an accountant, I have also done various marketing courses such as Chalene Johnson Marketing Impact Academy - so I will guide you through how to develop your career as a yoga teacher, setting up your own classes, marketing strategies, accounts, advertising , we will talk websites, social media and email marketing every weekend so that by the time you are finished the course you have all these key business elements in place so you are ready to fly.
